After almost a decade traveling the world and living and working in some of its most popular tourism destinations, I have learned that like most things the tourism industry has its benefits and its drawbacks. It can be an incredible tool for economic development and cultural awareness but, at the same time, an unyielding source of degradation to both the cultural and environmental resources of the area in which it operates. In the hopes of promoting the former, I started Green Nica.
Green Nica is a project that is twofold:
- The Green Nica blog is focused on spreading the word about responsible tourism and how it can be used to make your next vacation part of the solution and not the problem with the tourism industry. It will also focus specifically on responsible tourism options and initiatives here in Nicaragua, the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, and on promoting this amazing country with its bicoastal beaches, inland lakes, lush rainforest, temperamental volcanoes, colonial cities, politically charged history and, most importantly, amazing population of open, friendly and caring people. The blog will also include travel tips, destination features and much more. I will use story-telling, photos and videos to share the wonders of this incredible country with you.
- Green Nica Travel will function as a travel portal connecting you with one-of-a-kind experiences throughout the country with a focus on quality and sustainability. The goal is quality not quantity and providing experiences you can’t find anywhere else; experiences that let you experience the country as a guest not a tourist.
Sustainable tourism, responsible tourism, ecotourism or whatever you choose to call it is growing in popularity every year as people realize the impact their holidays can have on the destinations they visit. This is leading to more awareness on the part of the tourism industry, but is also leading to a growth in “green-washing” – the use of terms like ‘eco’ and ‘sustainability’ to market a business while not actually using sustainable practices.

Green Nica Travel will feature only products, accommodation and tour operators that have shown true commitment to the three pillars of sustainability: Environmental Sustainability, Social Sustainability and Economic Sustainability. Every offering on our site will include a description of who is behind the business and why they were chosen. That means that you can be sure that you are making the responsible choice. And by ensuring high standards of quality, professionalism and customer service with all our partners, you know that your vacation will be the experience of a lifetime.
Right now, I am in the beginning stages of the project, living and travelling around Nicaragua to find the best responsible tourism activities in the country, so the travel portal is still a work in progress.
But, in the meantime, I invite you to follow the Green Nica blog and learn about this beautiful country and how to use sustainable practices to ensure that this, and every other country, remain beautiful for generations to come.
